Well, it isn't awesome, but it is an improvement.

I think it's at least a small improvement over what we currently have. That video with the Sherman driving around shows a massive improvement for the gv guys at least. It's great to finally have some hills, ponds, rivers, and bridges to drive around, but from the air it doesn't look like as huge of an improvement.... so far. It is still in alpha so it's definitely going to see some huge changes before we even get to beta testing, and then we'll see some more changes before it hits full release. The lighting looks weird to me and the fog looks bland. The mountain edges look jagged and in need of some serious anti-aliasing, but again it's still alpha testing so I don't expect it to bee 100% (or even 50%) perfected yet. I hope the fog gets some improvement as it would be awesome fighting on the deck in it. Instead of hiding in the clouds above your opponent you can hide in the fog below them and attack from below undetected

What you guys have seen isn't that impressive, but considering the bulk of the work the alpha testers have done so far has been just engine optimization stuff, I wouldn't get too worried yet. Things are just now getting to the "Hey, what do you think sucks about what you're seeing" phase, so I expect to see big improvements visually in the next few iterations.

I agree, it hasn't blown me away or anything either, but I'll wait until I see it in beta before I get real concerned either way. I do think that they'll need to implement a ton of other changes in order to gain back old and get new customers, and keep them for the long term. A game manual that is complete and consolidated in a single spot, streamlined "new guy" training help video department, and most importantly, changes to the actual game mechanics. HTC is quite petulant IMO about making any changes, a recent thread I'm writing in there has long term guys who follow all the stats like that Lusche dude telling me there has only been a tiny game adjustment in the last 3 years, and few in the preceding couple of years. No change = big trouble, especially with the falling numbers, at least that's how I see it.
The whole 12 hour thing was ridiculous, HTC pretty much just picked fights and petulantly whined and then turned to threatening their customers instead of giving even an inch on the issue. I've never seen a company act like them. Go to that Flame warrior site, like it or not, but you will find hundreds of guys who all tell the same story - they left HTC over some bitter dispute on the BBS, or an argument/punishment deal with Skuzzy or HT. Ridiculous. Go to Eve Onlines forums, a 15 dollar per month game, and you can't find 10 guys who left due to clashes with the creators or moderators. It's just handled in a far more professional way in other games, overall at least, than at HTC. Very odd for a niche market company that has been bleeding customers for the last 4 years or more.
Anyhow, my prediction is the game won't have any major gameplay adjustments with the new release, it'll draw many out of the woodwork to see what's up, resulting in a spike in numbers for a short period of time. Six months after the beta is out, I would lay odds that we'll be right back where we all are now, albeit with a slightly prettier game. Low numbers, sub 300 on most nights, and lots of complaint posts and threads.

As somebody who has played EVE since 2008 I really wish HTC would take a page out of CCP's book from the last couple of years. God knows CCP isn't perfect but a lot of the stupid crap they pull is offset by the fact that they listen to their players and try to build the game that they want to see. PS: I agree with your predictions minus the complaint posts and threads. It's going to be hard for anybody to complain since HTC has already banned everybody who isn't a rabid die-hard fanboy.

I know right. I've never seen such a small company in such need of getting positive attention and approval from its customers. So many blind cheerleaders. Stupid Picture Posting Motherfucker told me yesterday that there is no problems, that everything is just fine, and that anyone pointing out HTC's problems are just whiners and complainers. How anyone who has seen the 600 player nights every night for years, and compare that to the 100s to 200s we see now NOT see a problem, is so diluted that trying to talk sense to them is like trying to teach a parrot to say FUCK.

I have personally accepted the idea that in a year or two Aces High will be just another extinct game in a very long line of extinct games. If HTC was going to evolve as a company and dig themselves out of this hole it probably would have happened already. While I am disappointed by this I hold out hope that the absence of any games in the niche that Air Warrior/Fighter Ace/Aces High filled will inspire somebody with a bit more business sense and a bit less ego to create something newer and better than what we have now.

I love it. The trench warfare, mustard-gas-realism is exactly what I'm looking for in a WWII game! We pilots will be fine with our toon, pigface O2 masks on.

This from the BBS today :
Quote from: SFRT - Frenchy on Today at 03:27:12 AM 'It's just a first pass, you can't judge is silly. When someone throws a ball you can fairly accurately predict where it's going to fall a few seconds after it leaves the hand. Most of the pictures and videos posted so far fail to impress me. Sure throw a 'ho ahhh' sunset to make it look better, but it's still has the same feel as the current engine. I'd have hoped HTC to bite the bullet and start something from scratch. It's an upgrade indeed that requires a lot of work Im sure, and I'll keep enjoying AH, but 'the new' feels like 'putting a newer stereo system and chrome rims on an old tired car'.
No where in this post does it state in any way what you do not like. Or rather "does not impress".
All it does is attempt to flame HTC.
Now I would like you to show me any other shots from other games that show 3d mountains 20 miles in the distance with haze layering in the atmosphere.

Is HiTech saying that AH2's new terrain engine is the only engine in the gaming world that has 3d mountains, 20 mile render distance and weather effects?? Or am I just reading that wrong?

You should all follow that "it's a new dawn" thread at HTC. Well those of you who can - (lol Changeup). Sorry pal, I shouldn't joke, I'll likely be next. Anyhow HT called out Frenchy, and Frenchy responded with a bunch of DCS pics. LOL! Well...HT DID ask.

Anyhow HT called out Frenchy, and Frenchy responded with a bunch of DCS pics. LOL! Well...HT DID ask. I will hate to see this game go down in flames but it is. HT has got to be sitting in his chair lamenting his failure to realize things sooner. That's gotta be tough to know you could have fixed it if you would have simply been in state of upgrade and stopped shopping for personal airplanes which he certainly wont be able to afford when this thing goes to the bottom of the toon Pacific. Instead, you spent time banning people for truly stupid shit and accepting every dumbass ankle humper in view.
The Grizz banning was retarded. But flamebaiters like stupid picture posting fucker, and about 25 others live on because they kiss his toon ass? See where that got ya? Mustard gas and 11 branch trees. I saw thread after thread after thread where guys like Grizz, Sunbat, MUZIK, Dedalos, Bighorn, Levi and other GREAT sticks made suggestions that were worthy of attention and, in point of fact, would have made the game better but nose-snubbing and attitude got in the way of great things. I guess that happens more than we would like...pride over progress.
