Am I the only one who thinks that Russian and NATO aircraft operating live fire missions in the same airspace and basically on opposing sides is a really fucking stupid idea?

John McCain wants to give the "rebels" missiles to shoot down Russian planes. That should put the Russkies in there place and settle things down. I wouldn't worry too much about it Tec.

Well... nobody ever said soft nation building was very effective. When there's a dictator who's been in power for a long time and he's done so by suspending the natural rights of his citizens... there's probably a reason he did it. lol

Putin has little to gain from a prolonged conflict involving his forces combating NATO. Instead, this will quickly fall into the same realm as the Spanish Civil War; each side testing out new strategies and equipment in preparation for the next global conflict. We will see pro-Assad and anti-Assad forces meeting on the battlefield but fighting with the equipment and the tactics of their host nation
That said, I hope the battles in Syria are either won decisively in the United States favor (err anti-Assad) or as complete stalemate. If Putin senses weakness or enjoys easy victories during this conflict it could be the catalyst for a much bigger conflict later.

That tactic worked very well during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in the 1980s. McCain is just saber rattling, he is good at it and has acted in that manner for many years. Don't forget the committee he chairs either!

Actually, Putin told, not asked, the US to stay out of the air space until they were done Yes, he wants to prop up the Assad regime with as little capital spent (money and blood). It is far easier to scare the opposition away than become involved in a fight that could escalate quite easily.
The comparison between the Spanish Civil War and the Syrian Civil War now is rather eerie. We all know what happened after the Spanish Civil War, I hope history does not repeat itself.
edit: I don't mind this kind of debate, as long as politics at home are left out of the discussion.

Argue his politics, not his motives or sanity because none of us want his shoes much less the mileage he's walked in them. Now to his politics. One man chairing a very visible committee is not the Gawd of War. He's a cog that runs 1 wheel. It's a large war wheel but only 1 wheel.

And yet again you've come up with some bullshit angle where I've implied he's a "Gawd of War" and you need to explain how things really are. Argue his politics but not the motives behind nor his sanity? That seriously makes sense to you?
